I have not had any issues with this phone at all. I have taken it on vacation and have not had any problems, though there were areas in the Caribbean where I had no service, due to lack of cell sites and such. I did have some scrolling issues with the ball with my first 8310, but after I cleaned it, all was good.

I have been using my Blackberry 8310 for about a month and I love it. It was very simple to set up and very easy to sync with my other email and contact programs. I have better phone signal than any other phone I have had and the additional applications have been excellent. My only complaints about the phone are that you cannot store applications on the memory card so you are limited on the applications you can run. Second, it slows down quite a bit if you have any major applications running in the background.

I really enjoy having internet access. Only one problem so far with the trackball sticking. It seems to be working fine now.

The Blackberry operating system was really designed for business users who need on-the-go access to work email, as well as other data. If you don't want a data plan, but want a full qwerty keyboard, I would suggest one of the quick messaging phones from AT&T. Two in particular that come to mind for users like yourself are the LG Xenon and the Samsung Impression. Both have full qwerty keyboards, and are well built devices.
